History of Wat Saket Temple
Wat Saket was first constructed in the 17th century, during the reign of the Ayutthaya empire (we also suggest doing the Ayutthaya Markets Tour). The temple was once known as Wat Sakae, meaning “Temple of the Vineyard.” Under King Rama III, the temple underwent renovation and growth in the 19th century. The temple is now known as Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan, which translates to “Golden Mountain Temple of the Great King.” A new golden pagoda was constructed on top of the hill.
Over the years, the temple has undergone several alterations and improvements. A 318-step wooden staircase was constructed in 1898, under the reign of King Rama V, and it leads to the summit of the hill seen in the article’s header image. The ladder was constructed so that guests may ascend the golden pagoda and take in expansive vistas of the metropolis.
A 1917 earthquake caused damage to the temple, and the golden pagoda fell. In 1935, under King Rama VII’s reign, it was reconstructed. The original wooden staircase was replaced in 1950 with a concrete one. In 2005, the temple underwent yet another renovation in anticipation of the 60th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s reign.
